Frequently asked questions
How do you divide gold fairly among several heirs?
Normalize everything to pure-gold weight first: a piece's weight × its karat ÷ 24. Mixed jewelry, coins and bars then become comparable, and each person's percentage can be settled by weight, by taking specific pieces of equivalent pure content, or by valuing shares in money at the live price.
Should we divide by weight or by value?
Pure-gold weight is the stable basis — it doesn't change with the market. Value it in money (at the live spot price) when someone takes cash instead of metal, or to offset unequal pieces. This calculator shows both for every person.
What about making charges and dealer margins?
Resale prices for jewelry are usually below the pure-content value because making charges are lost and dealers apply margins. For fair division between family members, pure-content value is the neutral reference; for an actual sale, get dealer quotes.
